Surprising Colombia: A stable democracy

Good foundations

  • Colombia is Latin America’s oldest and most stable democracy.
  • It has experienced peaceful changes of government every four years over the last half century.
  • Citizens have elected government representatives during free, fair and competitive elections.
  • Colombia enjoys full freedom of press.
  • A national debate to build up democracy, the Colombian Referendum October 25, 2003 enjoyed an unprecedented turnout.  During the following days after elections for mayors and governors, government agencies granted equal protection to all candidates, regardless of their political tendencies or whether they agreed or not with the current National Government.
  • In the capital, Bogotá, the candidate for the left-wing party, Polo Democrático who opposes the current Administration, was elected with guarantees of his full rights.

"58% of Colombia's illicit crops are located in FARC-influenced areas: 58,879 hectares of coca capable of producing 252 tons of cocaine per year, valued at more than 7.5 billion USD."
